Sibilia is by far one of the most vile humans I have ever had the misfortune of meeting in person. Never in my 62 years have I looked into the face and eyes of someone and knew without any doubt there was evil in this individual. Still gives me the willies, 10 months later.
Be sure there is some advantage to her making this move. And I would posit she is being backed by someone with plans.
What would be the advantage for Republicans to vote Sibilia in as Speaker? Did you cover that and I missed it?
To be sure, I didn't say Republicans SHOULD back her for speaker. Only that I think they could be persuaded by the prospect of embarrassing the Democrats. If they did end up backing her and she was able to somehow win the spot, Republicans should demand some MAJOR concessions for going along -- like half of the committee chairmanships.
It certainly could backfire. Sibilia's agenda really isn't all that different from Krowinski's. If the R's did help put her in the speakership, it could end up just providing bipartisan cover for the Dem/Prog agenda. But that's a column for down the road if this lead balloon ever gets airborne. ;-)
Thinking about this a bit, wouldn't it also be beneficial for Republicans to go to Krowinski and say, give us some chairmanships or we get behind Sibilia? Again this stuff is over my head, out of my league.
Great analysis Rob! Sibilia attended your CHS presentation in Ferrisburgh two weeks ago, which was a 2 hour drive each way from Dover. Perhaps she realized that the CHS was in big trouble and wanted to understand what went wrong! She also hear from me about the cul de sac of energy poverty her policies were leading us into. Was there some soul searching on the ride home?
She probably knows she will lose her prestigous committee assignment if the Dems take a hit in this election due to the policies she has pushed through. It is a sad irony that is she is running unopposed. If anyone deserves a serious opponent it is Sibilia. Putting her out to pasture would have been a kindness. Now she has to figure out how to save her skin.
I would like to think another scenario might play out. The Republicans pick up enough seats to put Rep. Anne Donahue's name forward as Speaker. If she wins reelection as an Independent she could have Republican and Democrat support owing to the respect she has earned for her brilliant career to date. She might be seen as the true healer that is needed at this point in time.
Flattered as I might be by that notion, I suspect the real reason she really took that long drive was in order to commiserate with Rep. Matt Birong about her coup plans. My presentation was incidental. She'd seen it before in Newfane, and didn't show up to the one in her back yard in Londonderry. She and Birong went out to dinner afterward, where I suspect they did some plotting and head counting.

Ah, the back stage stuff. Well, I think it could backfire on them. I'm no game player. So, what do I really know? Not much for sure.

And, Anne Donahue would make a truly great speaker.
