Oops, there I go, being all sanctimonious when I made a mistake myself. I should have written “infrasture” rather than “infrastrue.” My bad!

We all make grammatical mistakes, typos and misspellings. No matter how well I proofread my own writings, I often find mistakes and things I would change years later. It does gall me, however, when those mistakes are made by educators in a public document. For instance, looking at the so-named “jamboard” of options created by a “non-State of Vermont entity,” I immediately found “menue’ on the first page, top row, light green card. Further along , I wondered what the heck a “Breatkdown” was, and later, I had to ask what was this thing called “infrastrue.” I don’t mean this to be a cheap shot at the education community; I ran a statewide, NEA-affiliated teachers union myself. Perhaps I’m still smarting from a memo sent to Governor Snelling by the Vermont Department of Education. I got it before it went to the Governor. In a three-page, typed document, I found and circled in red roughly 15-20 errors. I sent it back to the department. It didn’t take long for me to get an apologetic telephone call from Rick Mills, who was Commissioner of Education at the time. My message to him was, “What does it say about our education system when the department helping to lead that system makes that many mistakes IN A MEMO TO THE GOVERNOR? (Emphasis added.)

We are discussing moneys collected to have our government run schooling businesses. The investment is in organizations and their infrastructure. It must occur to us that government run businesses typically are less than satisfactory. The schooling organizations we support are the prime examples. Our need to have an educated electorate could be accomplished in other ways. This business could be privatized. The communities' fiscal commitment [taxes] could be turned over to families. They could contract for the teachers, curriculum, school services they want. The out of control spending on organizations and infrastructure would no longer be on our agenda.

The standard per diem amount for serving on these committees, unless your being paid through your work to be on them.
